In the winter of 1843-1844 the Reverend Morton traveled with his wife Helen, their young son, Henry, Jr. and the Reverend’s brother Washington Quincy to what was then the Danish West Indian island of St. Croix on a sabbatical to help his brother recover his health. While on St. Croix, Morton, an artist and a poet, wrote and illustrated “Ode to St. Croix,” aptly describing in poetic verse their journey by ship to Colonial St. Croix as well as the island itself, its landscape and its people. This recently discovered and never before published manuscript and drawings consists of 25 handwritten pages along with 24 marvelous drawings that give an insight into the long forgotten and scarcely recorded island colonial era.
